3 tourists killed in boat accident off Bali

Aug 07, 2025

Jakarta [Indonesia], August 7: Three people were killed when a tourist boat carrying 80 people capsized off Bali, Indonesian authorities said on Wednesday. Those killed have been identified as two Chinese holidaymakers and a 23-year-old Indonesian crew member. His body was discovered in the water overnight some 100 metres from the site where the accident occurred, harbour official Aprianus Hangki said. The Dolphin II, a speed boat, had been on its way from Nusa Penida, an island located some 20 kilometres east of Bali's southern coastline, to the Balinese resort of Sanur when it suddenly hit ground near the port and capsized on Tuesday afternoon, according to I Nyoman Sidakarya from the local rescue services. Most of the 75 passengers on board were foreign tourists, including from China and Australia. Several people were reportedly injured in the accident. It was initially unclear what caused the boat to capsize. Indonesia comprises more than 17,000 islands and is heavily dependent on ferries and boats, but fatal accidents are not unusual. In March, an Australian woman was killed when a tourist boat heading from Nusa Penida for Bali capsized amid high waves.
