Egyptian, Jordanian FMs discuss worsening Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Cairo (Egypt) May 15: Egyptian Foreign Minister SamehShoukry and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed on Friday the deteriorating conflict in the Palestinian territories, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
During a phone conversation, both ministers stressed the importance of continuing the work on an immediate means to stop the conflict in the Gaza Strip and prevent any Israeli provocations in Jerusalem, the ministry said in a statement.
They also highlighted the necessity to resume the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which would give a real political horizon to end the conflict through a just and lasting solution that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Tension between Israel and the Hamas-led militant groups has been flaring up since Monday, leaving 122 Palestinians and nine Israelis killed, according to Palestinian and Israeli official figures.
Since Monday, the Israeli army said Gaza militants have fired more than 2,000 rockets at Israel, while the Iron Dome defense system intercepted most of them.
Meanwhile, Palestinian sources said the contacts to reach calm between the two sides have so far failed, adding Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations lead the truce mediation.
