Fresh attempt to form Dutch government with right-wing populists
Nov 29, 2023
Amsterdam [Netherlands], November 29:Following the major election victory for right-wing populist Geert Wilders, a second attempt is now to be made to form a government in the Netherlands.
Former minister Ronald Plasterk was appointed in The Hague on Tuesday to sound out the chances of a coalition.
The first attempt failed because the first sounding board, a member of parliament from Wilders' radical right Freedom Party (PVV), resigned due to allegations of fraud.
New sounding board Plasterk is now to hold talks with all parliamentary group leaders and present his report on December 5. Only then can substantive talks between the potential new coalition parties begin. Wilders' anti-Islam PVV won 37 of the 150 seats in parliament last week. Traditionally, it is now his turn to form a coalition. He needs at least two parties for a majority. (DPA)
