Feb 09, 2024

Washington [US], February 9: The US and its allies accused a group of hackers originating from China called Volt Typhoon of having quietly infiltrated key US infrastructure networks over the past five years.
On February 8, the US National Security Agency, CISA cyber surveillance agency, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the country's Transportation Security Agency announced that the Volt Typhoon hacker group had tried to infiltrating America's aviation, rail, public transportation, highway, maritime, oil pipeline, water supply and waste treatment networks for at least the past half decade.
According to The Guardian on February 8, the US side did not announce any names of organizations that were attacked by hackers of Chinese origin . However, US intelligence discovered that the hacker group maintained access to the information technology environment of some victims for at least 5 years.
Besides the US agencies, cyber security agencies from the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia signed the above announcement.
This is also the latest warning from US officials about Volt Typhoon, a hacker group that attracts special attention because it seems to pursue the purpose of sabotage rather than espionage.
The widespread nature of the attacks has led to multiple meetings between the White House and private representatives from the technology industry, including several telecommunications and cloud computing providers.
Accordingly, the Washington government asked them to help track Volt Typhoon's activities targeting key US infrastructure .
