Hanoi [Vietnam], October 22: Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres agreed on Friday to continue to strengthen multilateralism with the United Nations playing a central role amid unpredictable developments in the world and regional political and security issues.
The two sides held talks in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi as part of activities during Guterres' two-day official visit to Vietnam, according to a statement released on the Vietnamese government portal on Friday.
The two sides stressed the need to strengthen solidarity, cooperation and compliance with international law.
The Vietnamese leader and UN chief also agreed to further enhance relations between the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and promote the role of the bloc in tackling regional issues.
During the talks, Phuc suggested the UN continue to support Vietnam in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as help Vietnam develop policies to mobilize international funds in implementing long-term recovery in a greener, more sustainable and self-resilient way.
He also expressed his wish that the UN will help his country realize its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
