Sri Lankan court issues order barring former PM, finance minister from leaving country

Colombo [Sri Lanka], July 16: Sri Lanka's Supreme Court issued an order on Friday barring former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa from leaving the country without approval of the court until July 28.
A motion was filed on July 13, seeking an order prohibiting the two former senior officials, former Central Bank Governor AjithNivardCabraal and several other people from leaving the country, local media reported.
The motion also requested that an investigation be launched against the individuals responsible for the current economic situation in the South Asian country.
Sri Lanka has been facing a severe economic crisis which has sparked protests.
On Friday Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda YapaAbeywardena announced the official resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, before Prime Minister RanilWickremesinghe was sworn in as an interim president.
